so how can I keep whatever is eating them away so I can enjoy my herbs and vegetables without pieces of them being bitten off!!

I wont have a lot of room, maybe I could have some tomatoes, green beans, things like that. I dont know what kind of container to use either. Any tips?
Is it better to have a lot of sun or little? My patio gets direct sun the whole day.
