Why do people make their vegetable garden in a raised bed instead of just in the ground?

I want to start a vegetable garden but I am not sure if I need to have a raised bed or if I can just plant my vegetables in the ground with good soil.

    There are several reasons.. They want a compact garden space…Their soil stinks and they can use good soil in a small area They are old like me and it is a small space with good production and saves my back
